Open House

Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 10am-3pm

The opening of the first HLP property at 804 Eastern Avenue in the St. Clair Place neighborhood attracted local residents, community stakeholders and members of the public. Over 200 visitors were presented with new ways of seeing and experiencing vacant properties as community assets, rather than evidence of decay. The foursquare house showcased art-based projects that explored the material potential of the house, historical narratives of the area, and future land use or rehabilitation of the property.

This free event, facilitated by Los Angeles artists Mike Blockstein and Reanne Estrada of Public Matters, and hosted by the House Life Project, gathered together members of our local community who are committed to leveraging community assets as a means of addressing local challenges. Workshop participants contributed their personal insights and experiences as the group explored the ethical concerns of social and public processes and the ways that artists can contribute to positive change by working within a community. In order to consider issues from multiple perspectives, invited participants represented a range of professional experiences, ages and backgrounds including community leaders, neighborhood children, artists, educators and more.
